Description

Backyard Food Forests: A Practical 4-Session Series

Tuesdays August 9-August 30

5:30-7:00pm

Cost $80, includes 6-pack food forest plants

Want to harvest berries from May to September from your yard? From Strawberries to Serviceberries to Paw Paw you can fill your yard with edible, perennial food plants for a long summer harvest! Join this course to learn how to plant a small backyard food forest or just incorporate edible food forest plants into your existing landscape. This is a 4-session series.

A food forest is a planting of edible herbs, berries, shrubs and trees that provide food or medicine in a forest like setting. Plants in a food forest are perennial, that is grow back every year, and require minimal care once established.

Participants will learn about soil and perennial plant site prep, the best edible perennials for our region, perennial planting, and ongoing perennial plant care, through discussion and hands on work in Agraria’s Youth Forage Garden and Perennial Pantry Garden.

We will focus on tried-and-true perennials, especially berries and tree fruits, that thrive in our region using organic, regenerative practices and provide great forage opportunities throughout the growing season for kids and adults alike. Native edible plants will also be featured.

Sessions will take place at Agraria in the Barn and on the land in our Youth Forage Garden and Perennial Pantry Gardens. Any experience level welcome. Participants will leave with a 6-pack of food forest plants recommended for your growing site.
